Rugby Morons and the Sports Minister

Ok so what's the beef about these moronic rugby players in NZ who have an inability to control both their anger and their liquor. When I used to play rugby, beers after a game were to either celebrate or drown sorrows, but for the most part it was to get together with the guys and have a good time.

These days its seem the players are real dunces, maybe good on the field, but short of a few brain cells afterwards and especially when full to the gills with alcohol. NZ is quickly gaining the reputation whereby our rugby players, that especially play in high profile games, are tarnishing our good name.

So many instances occurring where the fuckheads just don't seem to be able to control themselves. The NZRU ain't getting tough enough. Look, if they represent a club, or a nation, they need to act like it. One strike and they should be out - I don't give a fuck who they are, high profile players need to start thinking about their careers a bit more and thinking of risk managing themselves.

Where is the sports minister McCully - why isn't he showing some leadership by coming out and talking about this a bit more? Why isn't he making it clear that drunken pigs who lose it are the kind of people we don't want representing clubs, or the nation for that matter. Its becoming embarassing to be a supporter of rugby in a nation where its our No.1 sport.

  1. I am not sure you have this one quite right. I played senior rugby in the Napier/Hastings intertown in the late 60's when HB had the shield. All Blacks played club and sub union rugby in those days.

Some of the stories I heard and even some actions I saw were the same or worse than what is happening these days. The difference is the newspapers protected the stars in those days and `what happened on tour stayed on tour.

There is not the same respect for top players from a more tabloid press these days.

  2. pdm, the attitude of society to alcohol was totally different then, not just the attitude to all Blacks.
Rightly or wrongly we now have a society which has conferred star status on the All Blacks and other top sports players. With that status goes the expectation they will be "role models" for younger people. If dad is a drunken pig and the "sports star" acts like a saint, the flawed logic assumes that the sports star will have the most influence on the young person.

  4. Sure, there were knuckleheads back then too, but today, they are held more to account by the public. They are hardly good ambassadors of the game when they fuck up in public simply because they have the inability to control themselves.
